We hiked the Narrows in Zion National Park this past summer 2021 and highly recommend it. We rented water shoes, socks, and hiking sticks from Zion outfitters which is just a couple minutes walk from the main park office. The rental of water shoes, socks, and hiking sticks was around $29 and didn't require any reservations. If you're hiking in colder months they also have waiters so you keep dry. If you are hiking in warmer months don't worry about the waiters and just get the shoes and hiking stick. This gear seriously helps out so much on the hike. The shoes had great ankle support and were comfortable in the water. The hiking stick came in handy with keeping our balance as we stumbled over some large loose rocks under the water. Definitely grab some gear it will make your hike much more enjoyable and easier. Absolutely don't hike barefoot, the people there who chose to try that were miserable and couldn't hardly walk. The hike itself is gorgeous and does in fact involve water. You will be walking in water anywhere from your feet to your waist depending on the amount of rain they have had and water levels. The deepest it got for us was about waist level. You can really hike as far as you'd like in the Narrows because it is beautiful at the beginning and just as beautiful the further in you go. You also can't really get lost since its just up or down stream, but be aware of your time as you can really get far back in all the narrows and run out of day light on the way back. Have fun hiking the Narrows! It is definitely a must when visiting Zion National Park.
