Do you agree that 'we' should normalize referring to Beyonce as Mama Africa?
Beyonce recently released a film, her visual album named Black Is King. It is highly inspired by African culture, fashion, artifacts and art in general. In my opinion, it's a fantastic, excellent piece of work. Fans reacted as usual, including mixed feelings from critics. However, one member of the Beyhive took it too far, the reason we are gathered here today.
Twitter user @_YourGirl_T, aka Thandie, a South African, was the one who asked if we should normalize calling Beyonce Mama Africa. But wait, don't we have out own Mama Africa? Zenzile Miriam Makeba, nicknamed Mama Africa, was a South African singer, songwriter, actress, United Nations goodwill ambassador, and civil rights activist. Associated with musical genres including Afro-pop, jazz, and world music, she was an advocate against discrimination and white-minority government in South Africa. She's the one who has always been referred to as Mama Africa.
And there are countless other African Queens who fit the description of the tier Mama Africa. Beyonce is just as qualified as them but she's not from Africa, she's African American. There's a big difference. She has never even toured Africa and only set foot here on vacation/business.
So myself and many many other Twitter users, card carrying members of the beyhive as it may be, disagreed with this tweet and aired our opinions, take a look and enjoy!
