In our previous videos for this series about “Common Mistake’s Beginner Rider’s Make,” I explained where the rider’s leg, foot, seat, body, hands, and reins should be when riding with balance, fluidity, and stability. And we finally made it to the mounting block, got on our horse and went through our riding pre-flight check system. Today we are going to discuss and demonstrate how ask your horse to move forward and without kicking, excessive clucking or the overuse of your aids. Because I teach how to “ride as one” in mind (focus), body (movement) and soul (relationship), your seat is the messenger and captain of your ride. This means your seat is the number one aid communicating with your horse, telling them what direction to go in and how fast to go. What makes this method of communicating and riding so important is it’s ability to keep you balanced and safe and the depth of connection that it creates through subtly. By teaching this way we encourage our horses to stay super light, responsive and connected. If we do the opposite and constantly bombard them with a lot of aids, pressure and stimuli we can either excite them, confuse them, irritate them or deaden them to our subtle cues. In our previous video we learned how to ask our horses to go, move forward. We will now use our seat and weight aid to help drive our horses forward until we can get in rhythm with their movement. Stay tuned for our next video in this series where I will explain and demonstrate how we ask our horses to keep moving.
