(7 Jun 2020) Demonstrators gathered in Budapest on Sunday to express solidarity with the Black Lives Matter protests in the United States sparked by the death of George Floyd. Congregated in the Hungarian capital's Liberty Square, between the US Embassy and a World War II-era Soviet memorial, speakers talked about the need to fight against racism as well as other issues such as environmental protection. Protestors knelt in silence for eight minutes and 46 seconds - the length of time a white Minneapolis police officer kept his knee on Floyd's neck while he was handcuffed and lying face-down on the ground. There were no disturbances at the Budapest event, which was guarded by a large number of police officers.
